As a Navy retired food service man, I do a lot of home baking for my family and a few friends. About a year back, the 25-pound bags of flour I purchase at a local retail outlet jumped in price from about $7 a bag to about $10. I continued to purchase the flour because homemade loaves of bread may still be the least expensive item you put on your table. When the flour increased in price almost overnight, bakeries and doughnut shops increased their prices. Example: a dozen doughnuts that went for a little over $5 jumped to more than $7. I just purchased a 25-pound bag of top quality all-purpose flour at my local retail outlet for $6.34. What about it, bakeries and doughnut shops? Don’t you think you can start coming down on your prices?
