Israel - Stashing cash under your mattress might seem like a pretty safe financial move these days, but you really have to hang onto the mattress. An Israeli woman lost her entire life savings when she mistakenly threw out her mattress - with $1 million inside. "It was all my money in the world," the Tel Aviv woman told an Israeli paper. The woman, who refused to give her name, said the bedding brouhaha erupted Monday when she decided to buy her elderly mother a new mattress and tossed out the old one. The next morning, the woman remembered that she'd hidden her life savings in the discarded mattress. "I woke up in the morning screaming, when it hit me what happened.". She went to look for the mattress, but it had already been hauled away by garbage collectors, she said. Searches at three different landfill sites turned up nothing. Dump manager Yitzhak Borba told a radio station that his staff was helping the woman, saying she appeared "totally desperate." He said the mattress was hard to find among the 2,500 tons of garbage that arrives at the site every day. He said he increased security at the site to keep would-be treasure hunters away. The woman said the missing money was in U.S. dollars and Israeli shekels. She refused to say how she acquired such a large sum.She kept the cash at home because of "traumatic experiences with banks" in the past, she said.
